Gertrude E. Huntington was born in Wooster, Ohio. She received a bachelor's degree in zoology in 1946 from Swarthmore College. From 1948 to 1950, Huntington served as chairwoman of the Biology Department at the Amerikan Kiz Koleji in Istanbul, Turkey. She received a master's degree in Conservation of Natural Resources in 1952 from Yale University.
